Regather Film Night: An Evening with Archive Sheffield PART TWO

Following an incredibly successful event last November, the Archive Sheffield team return to Regather on21st April to bring contemporary documentary work and a selection of visual treats from the city archives to the people of South Yorkshire.

We are excited to announce that the event will form part of a larger project by Archive Sheffield, “The Living Archive". The project exists to create and distribute new documentary work about the city that surrounds us in a series of print publications, film screenings and public exhibitions throughout
Sheffield.

The Living Archive is included in Sheffield Year of Making 2016, a year long city wide celebration of all forms of making in the city and region – from advanced manufacturing, specialist steels, forged products, cutting tools, flanges, bearings and blades to award winning theatre, international art and design, ground-breaking research and world class talent.

The Year of Making 2016 celebrates our past, present and future as a city of makers and promotes a world city with an international reputation for excellence and innovation.

The evening's programme will include:

***Melt Shop
Andy Brown and Nathan Gibson's poetic and dramatic depiction of large scale steel making presents a poignant and topical view of a changing industry.

It is a common belief that steel is no longer really made in South Yorkshire. The reality, though, is that more steel is made here than ever before, albeit in an industry that has evolved radically over the past few decades. Very high quality steel is now produced by mulitinational companies such as Tata Steel, which is headquartered in Mumbai. Andy Brown and Nathan Gibson visited their plant on the outskirts of Rotherham to document the process of contemporary steel making.

***Canvas of Voices :
Young People and Politics

In Gemma Thorpe's tender and insightful short film a group of young people demonstrate that far from being disengaged and disinterested in politics and political opinion, they are switched on, articulate, straight-talking, would rather hang out with Barack Obama than David Cameron, and there's no way they wouldn't vote in the next election.

***Premiere: THIS IS AWESOME

Presented publicly for the first time, THIS IS AWESOME centers around the National Community Wrestling Alliance - South Yorkshire's best and most exciting wrestling collective. The result of a year long relationship between the group and film making photographer Nathan Gibson, the film investigates the meaning of friendship, community and the perfection of an art form.

Additions to the programme and special guests will be announced in the coming days. Keep your eyes peeled!

Part of Archive Sheffield's mission is to make links between the past, present and future of the city we live in and we are lucky to maintain a strong relationship with the City Archives, allowing us to bring a selection of visual treats from the past to new audiences.
At our event this Thursday we are very pleased to welcome members of the Sheffield Film Co-op to the night and to be showing two films they made with the communites of Sheffield in the 1980s and 1990s

Sheffield Film Co-op was established in 1975 as a women's co-operative in order to make films from women's perspectives presenting positive images of women, showing their real activities, experiences and opinions. Their productions provided a space for local people to vocalise and discuss their experiences of living and working in the city and focused on themes including women and work, women's rights, immigration and empowering grassroots community activism. Their films were distributed to a wide range of audiences in the community, both locally and nationally and several of their productions were screened on Channel 4.
You can read more about them here: https://womensfilmandtelevisionhistory.wordpress.com/2014/04/04/becoming-sheffield-film-co-op/
On the night we will be adding two of their films to the programme, as well as holding an informal discussion session to talk about the work of Archive Sheffield and our project the Living Archive.

***Changing Our Lives – 5 Arches Community Centre (1984)
This Video was made in co-operation with a group of women living on a council estate in Sheffield.
Three years ago by squatting they began a struggle to improve their lot. Supported by adult education workers and with council funding and support, their centre is now providing some of the basic daily needs of the local women. This includes a full-time creche, a kitchen and education classes.
In a lively and optimistic portrayal the women show what their involvement in the centre has meant to them, how it has increased their confidence and changed their lives, both individually and as a group.

*** Thankyou, that's all I knew (1990)
This video was inspired by Sheffield's Yemeni Literacy Campaign which was launched in 1988 in response to the discovery that 95% of Sheffields' Yemeni community were illiterate and many were unemployed. It is a unique scheme in that it came out of a partnership between Sheffield City Council's Education Department and the Yemeni Community Association. Young bi-lingual Yemenis are trained to become literacy assistans and teach English to the older Yemeni men and Women in their community.
The video follows the development of the campaign and its participants over several months. Members of the Yemeni community – men, women and young people, talk about their literacy and language needs in the context of their history as a colonised people in Aden and their experiences of living in Sheffield. It provides and interesting and rare profile of a significant minority group in a large industrial city.
